NCMNS at Contentnea Creek has joined the international effort to create waystations for migrating Monarch butterflies. The Monarch Meadows is a 1-acre pollinator garden designed especially for the survival of the Monarch Butterflies. This garden will consist of 100 or more 8-ft by 8-ft plots to grow milkweed, which is the only plant Monarch Caterpillars eat. Each plot will also support a variety of flowering, nectar plants that all pollinators need to survive.

Why are pollinators so important?

Pollination is the important process by which pollen is transferred from the male part of the flower (anther) to the female part (stigma). Nearly 80% of all flowering plants and more 30% of our food crops rely on pollination by butterflies, bees, birds, and bats.

The population of the iconic Monarch Butterfly, depleted by 99% since 1990, is nearing extinction. The U.S., Canada, and Mexico have developed programs to create waystations along the Monarch migration routes to aid these important pollinators.

How you can help!

You can help by becoming a “Monarch Ally,” contributing to the support of one of these plots.  Completion will result in a beautiful walking park for visitors as well as a “Living Laboratory,” providing opportunities for thousands of visitors each year to participate in educational activities, citizen science, and conservation. Most of all, it will be a means of survival for Monarchs and other pollinators!

Each sponsored plot will display the name of sponsoring individual, family, or business with a personalized garden stake for one year.

Every 8-ft by 8-ft plot will be filled with milkweed and a variety of other flowering, nectar plants to attract an array of pollinators.

Individual/Family Sponsorship- $100 per year
