Outdoor Adventure



Kayaks are available for rental on Saturdays from 10-2 at our Grifton location for use in our shallow kayaking pond. The cost is $10/person.

Private kayaking lessons and excursions can be booked for groups of 5 or more. Contact our environmental educator, sam@atimeforscience.org for more information.

Kayak Lessons

Are you curious about kayaking, but a little nervous to explore it on your own? Do you want your children to develop strong kayaking and water safety skills? In this lesson, we offer a safe, shallow pond to accommodate even the most apprehensive adventurer. Our trained staff will offer a brief lesson on land before allowing you to practice your skills in the pond under supervision. This event is appropriate for anyone over 4 years of age.   The cost is $10/person.

Little Contentnea Paddle 

This quick paddle to the mouth of the creek and back is great for beginners or experienced kayakers looking for a leisurely trip. This beautiful route through stands of cypress trees opens up to the Big Contentnea Creek at the intersection of three Eastern NC counties. In the heat of the summer, this Saturday morning or Friday evening paddle is the perfect summer respite. This trip is appropriate for kayakers with all levels of experience.   $25 per person or $80 for a family of four or more.  

Paddle the Contentnea

This adventure offers views along the way that are second to none! Sightings of bald eagle, blue heron, and turtles are common along this route. This paddle is a 7 mile, downstream paddle from A Time for Science to Grifton, NC. Shuttle from Greenville available. This trip is appropriate for intermediate level or experienced kayakers due to distance. Space is limited so reserve your spot today!  The cost is $35/person.

Full Moon Paddle 

Embrace the beauty of the full moon on our monthly night time paddles. We enjoy these paddles in one of our charming ponds and build a fire for roasting marshmallows, making this an ideal trip for individuals, friends, and families. This event is appropriate for kayakers with all levels of experience.  Cost is $10. See our events page to register. 


Primitive Camping Fee (per tent)        $10.00 per night

Additional Firewood                              $15.00 per load
